Annie Ward
Lyme Regis, Dorset
Born in the West Midlands, in 2004 I graduated from The Birmingham Institute of Art and Design with a First-Class Honours Degree in Fine Art.  After graduation, I worked on a project with Oxford Visual Arts in collaboration with The Ashmolean Museum. As a result, I now spend time on both historic and genealogical research which often acts as the impetus for my work. Primarily a painter, I also construct pieces using textiles, paper and found objects. I work in series with layering, distortion and erasure all playing a key part in my practice, referencing the often-fugitive nature of both memory and historic narrative. My paintings are created using a limited palette. Layers of paint are laid down and then partially scrubbed out in a process of revealing and concealing. The imagery becomes sketchy with flattened, abstract forms; imperfect, indistinct yet vaguely familiar. I find acrylic paint an ideal medium as it allows for spontaneous adjustments as the painting progresses. As well as being a member of NAPA, I am an Academician and Trustee with the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts.  My recent work has been selected for exhibition at The Mall Galleries, The Bankside Gallery, The Royal West of England Academy, SWAc, Wells Art Contemporary, Black Swan Arts, Thelma Hulbert Gallery, The Atkinson Gallery and Salisbury Arts Centre.
